விந்திய மலைகளின் அடிவாரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்த யுனெஸ்கோ உலக பாரம்பரிய சின்னம், 10 கிமீ நீளத்திற்கு 750 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பாறை உறைவிடங்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளது.

பிம்பேட்கா பாறை உறைவிடங்களில் பெருங்கற்காலத்தின் (30,000-40,000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு) குகை ஓவியங்கள் நம்மை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்துகின்றன.

அவற்றுள் கடைசி தொன்மங்களின் வயதே, 10000 ஆண்டுகள் (கிமு 8000) பழைமையானவை.

பிறப்பு, அடக்கம், நடனம், விலங்கு வேட்டை போன்ற பல்வேறு சமூக நிகழ்வுகள் இந்த பாறை ஓவியங்களில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளன.

இங்குள்ள குதிரைகளை சித்தரிக்கும் ஓவியங்கள், கிமு 1500 இல் நிகழ்ந்ததாக கூறப்படும் ஆரிய படையெடுப்புக்கு, பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு இந்தியாவில் குதிரைகள் இருந்தன என்பதற்கு தெளிவான சான்றாக திகழ்கிறது.

Located in the foothills of the Vindhyan Mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 km.

Bhimbetka rock shelters feature prehistoric cave paintings dated to the Upper Paleolithic age (30,000 – 40,000 years ago) and the earliest are about 10,000 years old (8000 BCE).

Various community activities, such as birth, burial, dancing, social, animal hunting find place in these rock paintings.

Paintings depicting horses here, stand as a clear proof that horses existed in India tens of thousands of years before the so-called Aryan invasion around 1500 BC.
